10 SEO Steps For Higher Ranking

10 SEO Steps For Higher Ranking

If we want to make more money online, there are two critical things to focus on. The first is high quality content. For the purpose of this post, let's assume we've got this part right.

The second is traffic. Again for the purpose of this post, let's talk about the kind of traffic we get when people come to our post as a result of searching for something, aka "organic traffic".

We get organic traffic by ranking high in search engine results as a result of following few good SEO practices.

Most of us start blogging thinking that great content is all we need. We write new posts, publish them and then expect readers to come running... Soon it becomes very clear that our great little posts will never see the light of day without the extra tweaking known as Search Engine Optimization, or SEO.

So, let's review the 10 SEO steps for higher ranking, greater organic traffic and, ultimately, better results:

Step 1. Keyword Research.

Keyword research is a necessary first step to determine the right keywords to target and whether or not we should write the post in the first place. Keyword research entails finding the keywords that are both popular and have low competition. And, yes, we do that BEFORE we start a new post to avoid creating content no one cares about.

Start with Google’s Keyword Tool to identify keywords. Enter few words that you think people would use if they search for the type of content you intend to write about. The tool will list all related long tail keywords. Make a list of all long tail keywords that have low competition combined with a healthy number of searches per month. These are the keywords you'll want to target in your post.

When you find 10 or so keywords that you can use for your post, use Google to check out the competition sites for quality of the content and to make sure the market is not saturated with those keywords, i.e. there are not more than 5 entries in search results for your keyword. This process will zoom in on the best keywords to concentrate for your blog post.

Step 2. Start Headline With Keyword

Our goal is to place the keyword (or keyword phrase) as near to the front of the headline as possible. Here’s a good formula for crafting best headlines:

[#][keyword][ curiosity-capturing phrase]

if my keyword is "SEO Steps For Higher Ranking", a good headline would be "10 SEO Steps for Higher Ranking".

Step 3. Limit Post Slug To Primary Keyword

The post slug is what shows up after the domain for every post or page. When you type a headline, WordPress generates the post slug by placing every word in the headline. This clutters it up with lots of small words.

Instead, change your post slug to your primary keyword. The Headline for this post is 10 SEO Steps For Higher Ranking. So a good post slug would be ibozoo.com/seo-steps-for-higher-ranking/

Step 4. Save Images As Keyword.png

Images will add great SEO benefits with heavy primary and secondary keyword use as follows:

  • Save your images as [keyword.png] before you upload them to your site.
  • Add alt text as [keyword].
  • Add title tag as [keyword].

Use primary keyword for featured image and secondary keywords for images within your posts.

Step 5. Use Videos

Google gives higher rank to any content with video in it, especially since it bought Youtube. Consider embedding other people's videos in your posts if you don't already make your own.

Step 6. Use Subheading HTML

When search engines read a page, it looks for the <h1> headline/title</h1> tag. Then it looks for <h2>...</h2>, <h3>...</h3> and <h4>...</h4> subhead tags. Properly closed subheading tags help rank your post higher than any bolding/italicizing.

Step 7. Interlink To Other Posts

Find at least 2 opportunities to naturally link back to other relevant posts on your blog. This keeps both readers and search spiders on your site longer.

Step 8. Link To External Sites

Find organic ways to link to high authority sites like CNN.com, Webmd.com, etc. External linking to other authority blogs can also help you build relationships with other bloggers.

Step 9. Fill In Meta Description

Meta description is that little blurb with keywords that shows up under the blue link in search results. It should be an actual sentence in the post. It should be fewer than 155 characters and include the keywords.

The ideal candidate to copy and paste into meta description field is the last sentence of introduction paragraph which is normally used to summarize the post.

Step 10. Include Call to Action

The purpose of a post is to get someone to do something. You can ask readers to leave comments, respond to a thought-provoking question or let you know what they think. You can ask them to share your post on social media, take action or implement what they learned.

So there it is, your 10 SEO steps for higher ranking. Now go ahead, take action and implement it.
